Face – Someone that the bookmaker
believes to be in possession of useful knowledge about
a race.
Fair bet – One where over time,
the punter would likely end up even.
Favourite – The dog which has
the shortest price in the betting. If there is more
than one dog, they are known as joint favourites or
co favourites.
Field – The total number of
runners for a particular race.
Field book – A bookmaker’s
record of bets taken on a race, kept by the bookmaker’s
clerk.
Finish call – A dog’s
position at the end of a race
First past the post – Where
bets are paid out according to the order of finish,
regardless of any subsequent amendments to the result,
following a stewards enquiry or some other happening.
First show – Opening set of
odds put up by the course bookmaker for an event.
Forecast - Nominating the winner and
the second place as well. A straight forecast = 1st
and 2nd in correct order. A dual forecast =1st and 2nd
in either order.
Form – Reflects a dog’s
running ability at any given time
Fractional odds – The method
normally used to display odds, where both sites are
whole numbers. A bookmaker would use 15/8 rather than
1.875/1.
Front runner – Name given to
a dog who tends to run at the front of the pack
Full cover – Where a punter
has laid every possible combination of forecasts, tricasts,
doubles, trebles or accumulators from a given number
of selections.
