Schooling race - An un-graded race
in which dogs train for the future
Second call – The call made
on a dog’s performance at 1/8th of a mile
Selling race - A race the winner of
which is afterwards sold at auction.
Settler - Bookmakers employee who
calculates bets.
Shipper – A greyhound whose
previous race was not run at the local track
Show – The odds a bookmaker
is displaying for a certain bet at a certain time.
Show bet – A bet that your chosen
dog will finish third, second or first
Show price – The current odds
on offer at the course during the period before a race.
Punters sometimes have the option of taking these odds
rather than the starting price.
Single – A bet that involves
just one selection on one event.
Single-stakes-about – A bet
that is made up of two singles, each with an ‘any-to-come’
single at the same stake on the other selection.
Sleeper – A winning betting
slip that has gone unclaimed.
Slip – The written evidence
of a bet that is required in order for a bet to be valid.
SP – Starting Price.
Speciality bet – A bet that
comes on a specially printed slip, offered by one particular
company, that often comes with bonuses and consolations.
Speed – The time in seconds
that it takes a dog to finish a race
Stakes about – A form of ‘any-to-come’
bet.
Staking plans – A form of betting
strategy which involves moderation and management of
the stake size.
Start call – The position of
a dog directly following its release from the box
Starting price - The final price at
the time the race starts.
Stop-at-a-winner – Instruction
to a bookmaker to end a series of bets as soon as a
winner is attained.
Straight bet – A bet that encompasses
a win, place or show
Suspect form - Form which may not
be as sound as it looks on paper.
