Betting - track take
Any given track will take up to 17-20%
out of the betting pool for straight bets and even more
for the exotic bets. What’s left is paid back
to the bettors.
Another factor that may reduce the payoff is known
as breakage. This is the difference between the sum
of the betting pool and the final winners payout. It
happens because the total money bet, divided by the
number of winning tickets, will not usually be an even
amount. This is why tracks round winning payouts off
to the nearest ten.
In practical terms, this means that if your payoff
is £3.58 you will actually receive £3.50.
With long odds winners, the effect of this is minimal,
but tickets holders on favourites can often lose a large
percentage of their payoff.
