Running style
Often overlooked by novice punters, the
running style of a dog and how it is impacted by the
configuration of the track and the trap is a very important
factor in deciding how each dog will perform on any
given day.
Understanding and identifying split positions is the
first step to assessing a dog’s running style.
Splits are important as they determine how a dog’s
style will be affected by different course layouts.
In most races, the ‘break’ split is made
upon leaving the trap. There are then a series of other
splits which occur at different points throughout the
race. The position of a dog at these intervals can help
assess it’s speed out of the traps, whether or
not it is a front or back runner and whether or not
it is a strong finisher.
According to which track is being run, the start position
can vary. This can be critical in short races as early
‘ bumping’ can mean that the dog who should
have won fails to do so due to lack of recovery time.
Bettors should note the courses that require an early
burst of speed in contrast with those that require a
strong finish.
