Betting - The Trifecta
The most popular bet at any track is
without doubt the trifecta. In fact, almost 50% of the
money taken in at any given race comes from the trifecta
bet. In order to win, a handicapper must correctly predict
the top three finishers in the exact order they come
in.
Trifectas differ from other bets in that the odds cannot
be determined before a race. With eight dogs there is
336 potential outcomes and only one can be a winner.
The initial strategy is to place the optimum number
of bets on each race. Winning with a single bet is highly
unlikely because of the odds stacked against you.
In order to make your bets manageable, after identifying
the contenders, you must identify whether one of the
contenders is a standout. A standout is a dog that has
at least a 15% advantage over its closest rival. If
it is a standout, it may be wise to bet a wheel. If
not, then bet a box. The following is a guide to the
basic box bet.
